Maaloula, the memory of rock and man

Within the activities of the Syrian Wednesday ,  Nation Building Movement hosted in its twentieth session last night, January 29, 2020, a new evening of “Reflections on the Image”, this time with the documentary image through the visual documentation project of the light artist  Faraj Shammas

A collection of photos he chose for us from his book “Maaloula, Memory of Rock and Man”. The historical importance of Maaloula, which is more than 50 thousand years old, is no secret to anyone, and it is a destination for artists and painters. However, the photos taken by “Shammas” were distinguished by the transition from the general view to the details of the place and people in an artistic way that highlights the beauty of the place in a way that the people of the region themselves may not notice.

This evening included a presentation and discussion of these photos, in addition to an open dialogue about the importance of visual documentation in general and the extent of our need for it after we lost a large part of our tangible and intangible heritage during the war.

More details about the session can be found in the written and photographed reports below.
