Photo Stories

February 2021

The second evening of this year's Photo Tales, organized by the Nation Building Movement Salon, the Building Salon, had its own special character.

The idea of photo stories began with writing a story about a photo, but last month’s evening, my friend Mohammed Ghrer made the story different, as the photo inspired him to make a film rather than write a story. This opened up a new range of expression for stories, and allowed for difference and diversity to begin. Yesterday’s evening, Tuesday 2/16/2021, was unique with the participation of four friends and a friend who carried new texts and artistic experiences.

Ward Ahmed, Roaa Al-Qasir, Arwa Shikhani, and Ranim Khalouf shared their stories with us, which carry different visions of the image, in addition to Ola Abbas, who told her story accompanied by an imaginative visual presentation.

Ward’s story was distinguished by its imagination and surrealism, while Ruwa’s story carried the pleasure of narration and the elaboration of details. My friend Arwa Shikhani’s story was short and direct, while Ranim’s story carried a clear journalistic character, influenced by the profession of its writer.

As for our friend Ola, she added a different touch to the stories by creating and presenting visual content that is a mixture of images and sounds to support her imaginary story in all its details.

The texts received great attention from the audience, who offered their comments and feelings and praised the ability of the participating stories to create a space for discussion regarding their narrative structure, character building, and sharing details of a common memory among all Syrians.

It is worth noting that the black and white photo shows a man and a woman on a small boat driven by a child. It was taken in Lake Qarina in the Yabroud area in the Syrian Qalamoun. This lake was a beautiful tourist destination in the past, but later suffered from water scarcity and was no longer allowed to carry boats and receive visitors.
