Photo Stories
September 2021
The evenings of photo stories continue in the halls of the Bina Cultural Salon; however, the evening of September 7, 2021 was special this time in terms of the multiplicity of narrators and the density and richness of the presentation. The evening seemed like a lesson in storytelling, its levels and types, in an atmosphere full of harmony and creativity.
It begins with journalist Lina Diop in her story (The Silent Witness), which she linked to Masyaf and filled with intimate family details related to winter, traditional heritage costumes, and many memories. Her personal concerns and fears of the family being scattered by travel and asylum clearly dominated it.
The second tale was with Asala Qassam, entitled “The Son of the Wolf”, in a story with a dense presentation, precise rhythm, and full of derivations. It was distinguished by the strength of the surprising event that was well received by the audience.
With Amal Arqasousi, the third novel was titled (Her Laughter), in which a young child recalls his memories with his family in a gentle, artistic style, and in a way of free association without restrictions.
Linda Hussein and the hero of her story traveled on a preparatory trip for the funeral of her sick mother, filled with high human feelings, especially in describing her meeting with her in a magical scene. The text was distinguished by its connected sentences and its rich meaning, which could develop into a short cinematic text or an introduction to a long story.
Saba Tohma let her imagination run wild in a wonderful fantasy entitled (Ran away is Two-thirds of manliness) in a long, courageous text in which she skillfully played on the strings of history and a high sense of comedy, excelling in both by crossing between two worlds.
The evening concluded with Nabeel Arije in a simple, sarcastic and entertaining yet profound story, in which there is a contradiction between truth and reality that appears to be different from what it is. He used popular words and introduced colloquial phrases, and concluded it with a clever connection to one of the internal details of his story.
Finally, Dr. Ahmed Hassan, the coordinator of the cultural salon, told us the true story of the photo, which dates back to 1967, of a family from the eastern city of Homs rural - the Qusayr area. The photo was taken for no reason other than the family celebrating the camera and their enthusiasm for taking a group photo of themselves. The photo shows the traditional dress of the women at that time.
