All of this and more was recommended by the participants in the session 78 of the “Syrian Wednesday” dialogue program, which was held on the evening of Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at the headquarters of the National Building Movement in Damascus, under the title: “The state role in light of the trend to lift economic support: a solution or reproduction of the disaster?"

Participants also called for an end to move forward with deficit financing and the collecting, linking decision-making to those who make it, and supporting the real productive sectors, in addition to change the pattern of economic thinking, allowing the economic elites to work, granting them all facilities, and exerting popular oversight pressure on government work, they stressed that the current conditions cannot be confronted with the old unilateral mentality. Without partnerships, and the need to empower local communities.

During the session, the participants discussed the role of the state in economic and social transformation, the main factors that led to the adoption of the social market economy in 2005, and its non-implementation, how the war and subsequent economic challenges affected it, and the factors that re-adopted this approach and its risks and challenges.

Participants also discussed the risks and impacts that will have on the livelihood of Syrians, the private sector’s response to the new economic policies and their challenges, and the view of Syrians abroad of these developments and whether they can be considered a development in the economic and social system that expands the areas of participation and achieves the required environment for recovery?

They also pointed to the new role that civil society must play in the new social economic framework to preserve the interest of society, and the possibility of evolving the relationship between the government, the private sector and civil society.
